Galveston is home to many excellent academic institutions. In fact, the island boasts campuses of two of the largest university systems in Texas: The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and Texas A & M University at Galveston (TAMUG). Both schools are renown in their respective fields of study -- medicine and marine science.
Galvestonarea residents are also served by several community colleges: Galveston College (on the island) and College of the Mainland and Alvin Community College (both on the mainland). Additionally, two University of Houston campuses -- UH Central and UH Clear Lake -- are just a short commute from the Galveston Causeway.
The Galveston Independent School District (GISD) provides public education for 6300 students. It operates 1 high school, 4 middle schools, 5 elementary schools and 1 PK - 8 school. GISD offers bilingual, ESL and special education curriculum, among other special programs such as STEM, a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Magnet Program at Austin Middle School. Ball High School offers dual-credit courses with Galveston College and has a nationally-recognized Advanced Placement Program. Other School Districts near Galveston are Texas City ISD and Hitchcock ISD.
Galveston Island also has 2 public charter schools, 1 private, parochial high school, 1 private, parochial elementary/middle school, 1 private alternative elementary school, and several private, parochial preschools.

Texas A & M University at Galveston (TAMUG), Texas Maritime Academy Mitchell Campus, Seawolf Parkway, Pelican Island (409) 740-4403 Texas A&M University at Galveston is the ocean-oriented campus of Texas A&M University. It offers a unique blend of marine and maritime programs, including majors in science, business, engineering, and transportation. The Texas Maritime Academy Corps of Cadets at TAMUG encompasses license option cadets, NROTC cadets and Spirit Unit cadets.
